(KZN.RU, August 13, by Renat Shirmanov) Tatarstan athletes’ victories at the 30th Olympic Games should be a good example for the young. This opinion was expressed by Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin. The organizational experience of the Games should be given close attention in anticipation of the 2013 Universiade.
Russia was represented at the Olympics by 436 athletes, 22 of whom were from Tatarstan. Our athletes have made a significant contribution to Russia’s medal count, having won six medals.
Yulia Zaripova (women's 3,000 m steeplechase) and Elvira Hasyanova (synchronized swimming), competing for Tatarstan and Russia’s other regions, became Olympic champions. Russia’s volleyball players won gold on the final day of the Olympics. Among the winners were several players from Kazan’s Zenit -- Maxim Mikhailov, Alexandr Volkov, Nikolai Apalikov, Yury Berezhko and Alexei Obmochaev. The team’s head coach, Vladimir Alekno, also coaches Zenit. Fencer Kamila Gafurzyanova won silver, and shooter Vasily Mosin and taekwondo fighter Alexei Denisenko took bronze.
"Our athletes have done their best to celebrate our country at the Games, which attracted sporting talents from all over the world. Their victories are a huge stimulus and example for our children and young people,” said Ilsur Metshin.
