(KZN.RU, December 27, by Alisa Rozanova). "2012 is the Year of the Black Dragon in the Oriental calendar. A similar dragon is depicted in our emblem, so I truly believe that this is our year and that it will bring good luck to Kazan.” This hope was expressed by Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin in a live television broadcast.
The topics of this year’s last phone-in with the mayor of Kazan on the "Hot topic of the day" program on Efir TV were the perennial urgent problems, the year’s summing up and forecasts for 2012.
Ilsur Metshin said that he had worked especially hard this year, “literally without a single day off". "I’ve been a mayor for fourteen years, and every time it seemed that last year was busy, productive and hard but the next one would be easier ...," intimated the Mayor. In his words, "a city of a million residents has a million problems" But the achievements of Kazan in 2011 alleviated the severity of many important issues of that million. In particular, unprecedented rates of fertility and housing construction were recorded: 942 thousand square meters of housing area were built in the capital of Tatarstan, which is an equivalent of roughly one square meter for each resident. 4200 families received keys to new apartments under the subsidized housing program .
Ilsur Metshin noted that the city lived a rich cultural life pointing out the high level of international and national festivals in Kazan - Chaliapin, Nureyev, Golden Minbar, The Creation of Peace and Aksyonov Fest. The mayor especially noted Sergei Bezrukov’s film "The True Fairy Tale", in which the action is laid in Kazan.
Ilsur Metshin called Kazan’s winning the bid to host the 2015 World Cup in water sports a genuine milestone
In conclusion, the Mayor reminded the citizens that 2012 was the last before the Universiade, and the efforts of city government would be aimed at completing the construction of roads, interchanges, athletic facilities and general urban improvement. Tremendous amount of work should be done in the historic city center.
