September 20). Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, took part in the
extraordinary meeting of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs of the World
Organization “United Cities and Local Governments” (UCLG), which was held in
Barcelona (Spain).
Participants
of the meeting, including Ada Colau, the Mayor of Barcelona (Spain), Berry
Vrbanovich, the Mayor of Kitchener (Canada), Jacqueline Moustache Belle, the
Mayor of Victoria (Seychelles), and others, discussed preparations for the
forthcoming World Summit of Local and Regional Authorities in Bogota and to the
UN Conference on housing and sustainable urban development (Habitat III).
The new
leadership of the UCLG on 2016-2019 years will be chosen at the summit, which
will take place on October 12-15. The second term of work as the President of
the UCLG of Kadir Topbash, the Mayor of Istanbul, is ending. “He led a very
active work, has deduced the authority of this organization on a serious
level”, said Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan.
The World
Organization “United Cities and Local Governments” is a voluntary international
merger of associations, unions and individual municipalities, established in
2004. The UCLG is the most powerful and influential organization in the world
in the field of international cooperation for cities. The organization aims to
strengthen cooperation of local governments and represents their interests on
the world stage.
The UCLG
brings together more than 1000 cities and associations of the world and
represents more than 70% of the world population today. The UCLG has seven
regional offices: Africa, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Eurasia, Latin America, Middle
East, North America, as well as the department of “Metropolis”, which brought
together 137 capitals and major cities from all around the world.
