The second cell
of the Vostochny landfill has been opened in Kazan. Its capacity will
be enough to dispose
of municipal waste for
2.5 years. A modern automated filtration and neutralization system has been
installed at the site, it has no analogues in terms of capacity and technology
in Russia. For the first time, a bio-repellent protection system will also be
used to repel flocks of birds. Radiation control frames have been installed at
the entrance to prevent the import of hazardous waste. The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur
Metshin and journalists have visited the site.
The site
will be able to process up to 550,000 tons of garbage per year from Kazan and
Zelenodolsk, and 1,800 tons per day for a period of 2.5 years.
«The landfill has been built
using the new unique technologies specific to our country and has been put into
operation in strict accordance with Russian environmental regulations meeting
all international standards», – said Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan.
The second cell of the Vostochny landfill covers an area of 84,600 square
meters. After it is filled, the landfill will be closed and restored.
«Ten years ago, we received many
complaints from residents of settlements, and in the summer, we received
appeals from residents of Azino residential area. However, now there is no
problem with odors. In addition, there has been no environmental damage done to
nature. Here, the most modern sewage treatment plants have been established. No
harm has been done to the soil or groundwater, and such technologies have not
been used at any other landfills in Russia yet», – the Mayor added.
Air, water, and soil quality are monitored at the landfill. Local sewage
treatment plants operate here, similar to large chemical plants. An artificial
reservoir has been built on the site. The filtrate from this reservoir is
purified from salts, heavy metals, and biological pollutants, making it
suitable for fish farms.
Ilsur Metshin expressed his gratitude to the regional operator: «This is a
true water purification plant. The company invested 700 million rubles in the
filtration of the storage pond, which is a significant contribution to the
ecology of the city».
One of the challenges with maintaining the landfill is the presence of
birds that search for food there, interfering with work and picking up garbage.
To address this issue, bio-repellant measures will be implemented. Staff
ornithologists will regularly visit the area with two trained hawks. Under
human supervision, the hawks will scare away other birds.
