I.Metshin opens longest streetcar route in Russia's recent history
(KZN.RU, November 1, by Ekaterina Andreyeva) Today, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin launched streetcar route No. 5 from the “Solnechyi Gorod” neighborhood to the train station. The mayor noted that this is a great event in Russia's rapid transit history since it is the longest route opened in the past 20 years.
The entire length of the route with 32 stops is 26.9 km (the round trip is 52 km long). Today, the streetcar network (four routes excluding the newly opened one) serves 80 thousand passengers daily. The new route is expected to carry some 40,000 passengers a day.
I.Metshin noted that the gradual improvement of city transportation is a determined policy of the city authorities. Thus, five years ago, city buses were upgraded: the minibuses were replaced by full-size vehicles. Currently, a major breakthrough in the electric transportation is planned.
