One of the first stations in Russia to convert landfill gas into electricity will be built in Kazan

Recultivation of the Samosyrovo landfill on the Mamadyshsky tract has launched in Kazan. 876.5 million rubles were allocated for the implementation of the project under the Clean Country federal program of the Ecology national project.

Representatives of the municipal and republican media were able to get acquainted with the scope of the upcoming work during an on-site press tour. “One of our big challenges after the Samosyrovo dump is the KEK landfill. To date, there are 1 million tons of garbage. But in November-December 2023, when we complete the work, there will be another green hill that will give us green energy”, - Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, told reporters.

247,000 cubic meters of waste will be moved

“We continue our work on improving the ecological framework of our city. This is the second such site after the Samosyrovo landfill. But here we have set more complex tasks: new technologies for converting landfill gas into electricity will be used here”, - I.Metshin noted. He reminded the participants of the press tour that the recultivation of the Samosyrovo landfill was completed last year, located 50 meters from the KEK landfill.

The Samosyrovo landfill is located on the area of 14.1 hectares and consists of three cells. The first of them is completely filled and decommissioned in 2009, the second is 57% full, and the third is empty.

The recultivation of the landfill will be carried out in two stages. The first stage is technical, within which the landfill body will be brought up to standard.

“On the first cell, we plan to reduce the height of the hill by 7 meters by moving the ground to the second cell, - said Iskander Giniyatullin, deputy head of the Executive Committee. - After that, we will be able to level the hills, cover them with a special membrane, and then plant trees here. In general, the same works will be carried out as on Samosyrovo hill, which will allow creating a clean site here.” In total, 247,000 m3 of waste will be moved from the first cell to the second, and the slopes of both cells will be leveled.

For the first time, new approaches will be used during recultivation to solving the issue of landfill gas formation.

“The gas formed in the landfill body is mainly methane. It smells unpleasant, damages the environment and fire hazardous. But it can be used to generate electricity. To do this, it needs to be collected and cleaned”, - explained I. Giniyatullin, deputy head of the Executive Committee.

An active degassing system will be installed at the landfill to collect gas. As of today, 93 vehicles and 18 people are involved in the facility, the work is on schedule.

The recultivation project also provides for the collection of landfill wastewater. It will be collected and sent to the treatment facilities previously installed during the reclamation of the Samosyrovo landfill. After cleaning, the wastewater will be collected in a special storage pond, from where it will be used for watering plants.

The biological recultivation stage involves large-scale landscaping of the entire landfill site.

“This is not our only project aimed at improving the environmental situation, - the Mayor reminded reporters– A large program is being implemented in the Vodokanal's activities, including the cleaning of silt fields. We will continue to pay special attention to environmental issues”.
