January 18). Kazan became the winner of the annual republican contest
“Eco-leader” in the nomination “For Achievements in the Field of Environmental
Protection in the City”. Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, took part in the
awarding ceremony held today at an expanded meeting of the joint final board of
the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the RT and the Office of the
Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources in the RT.
The meeting
was held in the Cabinet of Ministers of the RT with the participation of Rustam
Minnikhanov, the President of the RT, and Artem Sidorov, the deputy minister of
Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation and the head of the
Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Environmental Management.
Participants summed up the results of work in 2017 and discussed plans for 2018.

Ivanov, the deputy director of the Institute of Ecology Problems and Subsoil
Use of the Academy of Sciences of the RT, initiated the creation of the
All-Russian Ecological and Educational Center in Kazan with a modern station
for young naturalists. It is assumed that schoolchildren will conduct
scientific research, implement unique projects to study the nature of their
native land, deepen their knowledge of the field of ecology at its base under
the supervision of teachers. The first ecological class was successfully opened
on the basis of the Kazan Gymnasium №3 in the framework of the Year of Ecology
and Public Spaces in the RT.
“We have an
excellent base. School Olympiads show how high the level of our republic is”,
said R. Minnikhanov. “This should be supported and developed, it is a good and
necessary thing”.

The annual
republican contest “Eco-leader” is held among organizations, individual
entrepreneurs, local governments, educational organizations, public
associations, citizens, and the media to encourage effective solutions to
issues of environmental management, protection, and safety. Materials from the
participants were accepted from September 1 until November 15, 2017. The
competitive commission, which included employees of republican ministries and
departments, scientists, representatives of public environmental associations,
determined the winners.
