(KZN.RU, November 21). Russia has been first elected as the co-presidents of the World Organization of United Cities and Local Authorities (WOUC). This has become known on the World Summit of this organization held in Mexico.
The President of the World Organization of United Cities and Local Authorities became Kadir Topbash, the Mayor of Istanbul who succeeded Bertrand Delanoe, the Mayor of Paris. The co-president of the organization was elected Ilsur Metshin the Mayor of Kazan.
About 3000 municipal leaders from all around the world and major figures of international organizations gathered for 4 days in Mexico to study and discuss the most topical issues of local authorities. Such forums are held every 3 years and have already been held successfully in Paris in 2004, Cheju (Korea) in 2007.
"The participation in such a summit is an important event for any Mayor”, Ilsur Metshin said, “there are 136 countries. Mayors from all around the world, all continents, from cities and from small Municipalities gathered here”.
According to the Mayor of Kazan the problems faced by the head of the cities are the same. "These are issues in ecology, safety, transportation, energy conservation, education, and health", Ilsur Metshin considers.
"I hope that local authorities will make a statement at the top of their voice including the cooperation with the United Nations with the help of this organization”, the Head of the Tatarstan capital said, “as for me it is a great honor that Russia represented by Kazan has been first elected as the co-presidents of this organization. "
According to Ilsur Metshin the following World Summit of the WOUC will be held in 2013 in Rabat (Morocco). Earlier the members of the World Organization of United Cities and Local Authorities gathered together once every three years. According to the Mayor of Kazan meetings of the WOUC will be held quarterly.
"With coming of Kadir Topbash, the new President the organization will receive a new development. I am in no doubt about it”, Ilsur Metshin said.
