Kazan street names to be translated into English under supervision of linguists and...
(KZN.RU, December 17, by Alisa Rozanova) A special board to translate the names of streets, squares and lanes into English has been set up in Kazan. It is composed of linguists and experts who work together to develop common rules for translation. This was reported at a Kazan City Hall meeting by Chairman of Foreign Relations and Tourism Ivan Kadoshnikov.
It has been agreed to transliterate the names as closely to the source language as possible, except in special cases.
The names of the first 107 Kazan streets have already been translated in accordance with the draft regulations. A final approval of the translations is scheduled for the end of January 2013.
Ilsur Metshin stressed the importance of the task for the city which is visited by an increasing number of tourists. " A navigation system and audio guides work effectively in Kazan, so correctly translated street signs is not a trivial matter: punctuation, spelling – all must be taken into account," said the mayor.
