A general
meeting of the Association of Volga Region Cities took place in Perm with the
participation of Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Federal
Structure, Regional Policy and Local Government Andrey Shevchenko, Deputy
Representative of the President of Russia in the Volga Federal District Igor
Burenkov, Federal Inspector for the Perm Region Alexey Vorobyov, as well as
heads and representatives of 24 cities.
A report on
the work of the association, approved plans, elected a board of 18 people, as
well as a new chairman were announced at the meeting. The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur
Metshin, who headed the association since 2014 for three terms, proposed to
elect the Mayor of Ufa Ratmir Mavliyev as chairman. The candidacy was approved
unanimously.
“For almost
ten years we have worked together, solving the most pressing and burning issues
of our cities. I wish to keep the pace of work over the years to be preserved
in the future,”- Ilsur Metshin said.
The Mayor
of Kazan thanked his colleagues for their trust, joint work and promised full
support to the new leadership. He will continue to represent Kazan in the
association as a participant.
For
reference, the chairman of the association is elected for a term of three
years. For the first time, Ilsur Metshin headed it in 2014, and then was
re–elected to this post twice - in 2017 and 2020. He currently holds the post
of President of the UN Advisory Committee on Local Authorities (UNACLA). At the
2nd Kazan International Legal Forum in September 2023, he made a proposal to establish
an Association of BRICS cities.
