I.Metshin: “After the construction of the new building, gymnasium No. 18 has become a universe of knowledge”

A new building of gymnasium No.18 with the Tatar language of education will open in Kazan on September 1. Now the workers are completing the final finishing and setting furniture. In the new school year, 670 schoolchildren, including 95 first-graders, will go to the gymnasium. The Mayor of Ilsur Metshin inspected the readiness of the gymnasium for the upcoming school year before the opening.

“Traditionally, we open new schools for the new school year, and this year is no exception. Construction work is being completed in the new building of gymnasium No.18, designed for another 300 students. It will be a modern school with a large canteen, sports and school hall”, - the head of the city noted.

The Mayor of Kazan noted that in addition to the construction of an extension to gymnasium No.18, preparatory work is currently underway for the construction of two more schools. Their opening is scheduled for next year.

The first building of gymnasium No.18 on Kol Gali Street, 13 was built in 1982 as a kindergarten and adapted for use as a school in 1994. The educational institution, located in a densely populated area, demanded more space. The two–storey building with an area of 2.6 thousand sq.m has been adapted for primary classes by the new school year - about 240 children will study there.

The new building with an area of 10,700 square meters will accommodate classes for middle and high school students – up to 300 people. On the ground floor of the building, there is a canteen in the format of a school restaurant, where more than 200 schoolchildren can dine at the same time. “Students will eat in three shifts, and the canteen is equipped no worse than a modern city restaurant”, - Rima Mukhamedshina, Director of the Kazan Department of Food and Social Nutrition, told the head of the city.

For reference, 144 school restaurants will operate in Kazan educational institutions in the new school year – 78% of the total number of canteens. This summer, work is underway at 31 canteens located in the buildings of 30 educational institutions.

The Mayor of Kazan also inspected the school hall for 350 people with a balcony for spectators, and a new spacious sports hall. “The new sports hall is equipped as the best gyms in the city, - Ilsur Metshin noted. - Here children will be able to play sports, as well as to train for various competitions”.

The head of the city also drew attention to the design of educational facilities. Ilsur Metshin stressed that the gymnasium is called “Galam” (Universe – in Tatar) not by chance: “This place has become a universe of knowledge”.

“All the works are in the homestretch. By the beginning of the school year, the gymnasium will have everything to meet students and teachers”, - Ilsur Metshin stressed.

In addition to the improvement of the school territory near the educational institution, a comprehensive repair of the driveways and the yard at 15/21 on Kol Gali Street, where more than 1,300 people live, is taking place. The work is carried out under the Our Yard republican program.

“Presently, active work is underway – asphalt pavement is being laid, sidewalks are being equipped, lighting is being replaced. In the near future, workers will start installing a children's playground and landscaping the green area of the yard”, - Igor Kulyazhev, Deputy head of the Executive Committee of Kazan, told the head of the city. Special attention was paid to parking spaces – their number was increased from 28 to 102.

For reference, 266 yards of 466 houses will be improved in Kazan this year. As of today, construction work have been completed on the territory of 224 houses. The work is 75% completed.
