(KZN.RU, May 6th, by Renat Shirmanov). The construction of the future building of The World Chess Federation (FIDE) Academy has begun in Kazan. The Kazan Palace of Chess is to become the world’s first building of this kind.
The State Councilor of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaymiev, the Mayor of Kazan Il’sur Metshin, the President of The World Chess Federation Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the Chairman of the Board of the Russian Chess Federation Ilya Levitov have taken part in the solemn ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the future academy building.
The creation of the FIDE Academy was decided upon by The World Chess Federation. The Government Tatarstan and the Mayoralty of Kazan have shown great interest in this project and have suggested several locations for the future chess center. As a result of long negotiations, the choice has fallen on an Ostrovsky Street site. According to the planners, the site is convenient due to its well-developed infrastructure and closeness to subway stations.
In order to host the biggest world tournaments and to ensure the participants’ comfort, it was decided to combine the Chess Academy with an international class hotel complex. In addition, a fitness center will be constructed in the chess center, where future visitors to the academy could workout. The World Chess Academy buildings will be incorporated in the complex of four unique high-rise structures "Parts of the World".
According to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE Chess Academies will soon appear in New York, Ulan Bator, and in one of the cities of Korea, but the first Palace of Chess will open in Kazan.
The Chess Academy of Kazan will be a training base for the preparation of players, coaches and arbiters. An Inter-University Chess Tournament will be held there within the framework of the World Student Games of 2013. The building will be equipped with state-of-the-art Internet technologies which will enable the contenders to compete from different world locations. The floor space of the 25 story structure will be 22,500 square meters (242,188 square feet).
