(Kazan, KZN.RU, May 23, by Adel Galiyev) Yesterday's concert featuring an international celebrity, the legendary tenor Placido Domingo was a triumph. The concert, held in Tatneft-Arena, gathered a full house; Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov and Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin were among the audience.
The first part of the concert opened with Verdi's "The Power of Destiny"overture performed by the RT State Symphony Orchestra under Alexander Sladkovsky. It was followed by arias from such famous operas as "Romeo and Juliet", "A Masked Ball", "Norma", " Rigoletto" and "Andrea Chenier", sung by Placido Domingo and Honored Artist of Tatarstan Aida Garifullina, accompanied by the State Symphony Orchestra of Tatarstan under the baton of Eugene Kohn.
Placido Domingo himself stood on the conductor's podium during the execution of the Duke and Gilda duet from Verdi's "Rigoletto". The duet sung by Aida Garifullina and Belarusian tenor Vladimir Dmitruk completed the first part.
After the intermission, the program was even more diverse. The second part opened with Verdi's "Ernani " and "La Traviata"; then Vladimir Dmitruk gave an enjoyable performance of Lensky's aria from Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin", followed by Mozart (Aida Garifullina and Placido Domingo's duet). The program was completed by the maestro performing works of his compatriots, Moreno Torroba and Pablo Sorozábal, and Aida Garifullina sang Pakhmutova's "Tenderness".
The evening was not over however. When the artists came out to take a bow, the audience gave them a standing ovation and would not let the singers leave the stage. After numerous curtain calls, numbers by Puccini, Curtis Velasquez and Bernstein ("West Side Story") were performed. It is worth noting that the Neapolitan song "Do Not Leave Me" by Curtis were sung by the singers' trio.
Even after the artists left the stage, applause and bravos would not stop. It will be recalled that 2,072 Kazan music teachers were invited to the concert at the initiative of Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin with support by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov.
