(KZN.RU, May 24, by Taisiya Basharkina) The revival Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda (Old Tatar Settlement) is a vivid example of complete block reconstruction. This opinion was expressed by Mayor Ilsur Metshin at a meeting of the Board for the Development and Preservation of the Historical Center of Kazan.
The first Old Tatar Settlement area to undergo complex renovation will be three blocks bounded by Tatarstan, K.Nasyri, Sufyan and Sh.Marjani streets. This is due to the fact that a number of landmark buildings are located on K.Nasyri Street – the Apanaevskaya Mosque, the Marjani Mosque and houses associated with the names of famous Tatar educators, merchants and religious leaders.
Kunche Street, opening onto the Lake Kaban embankment, will look similar to compact pedestrian streets of European cities. It will become a zone of rest with trees, benches, water wells and mini-cafes.
Kazakov and Kushayev manors will be connected with Marjani Street by double-exit courtyards. They will house a hotel, an ethnic restaurant, shops and boutiques. A crafts and restaurant complex will open at 8 Marjani Street (former Sabitov estate). It will include a museum of Tatar crafts, pottery shop, gift shop and several restaurants.
"This is just the first step in the restoration of the Old Tatar Settlement. We could hardly believe this could be done, but today whole neighborhoods rather than individual buildings are being restored. It is important that the recovery is systemic," said I. Metshin.
