(KZN.RU, January 16, by Taisiya Basharkina). The capital of Tatarstan has come close to the fertility rate record of 1987: in 2011 18,385 babies were born, which is only 345 fewer than in 1987, said the head of the Civil Registry Albina Shavaleeva at the Business Monday meeting.
"The high birth rate is a reflection of Kazan families’ confidence about the future," Mayor Ilsur Metshin commented on the demographic situation in Kazan. The demographic growth is largely due to the state support provided to families with a second and third child, the birth certificate, the maternity funds, the benefits to pregnant women and mothers on maternity leave, the "Belekech" program and the subsidized mortgage.
The 2011fertility rate in Kazan was 16.1 per thousand population, the mortality rate - 12.1. The number of marriages in the city in 2011 hit an all-time record of 13,053.
"We will make every effort to maintain high fertility rates. In addition to the measures taken by the government of the republic and of the country as a whole, we’ll ensure high standards of health service in the capital," summed up the mayor.
