October 5, Alena Miroshnichenko). Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, has been
re-elected the President of the Eurasian branch of the UCLG. This decision was
made during the General Assembly of the branch, which was held today in
Cheboksary, the capital of the Chuvash Republic. The meeting was held in the
framework of the Congress of Local Authorities of Eurasia.
During the
Assembly, the participants summed up the work done over the past 3 years. The
most important events during the reporting period included the V UCLG World
Congress, which was held in Colombia in October 2016, the UCLG Executive Bureau
meeting in Kazan, and the VIII International Conference of Eurasia World
Heritage Cities on the theme “Children, Heritage, Tourism”, which took place in
April last year in Turkey. Active work was carried out in the direction of
strengthening cooperation with other branches of the UCLG: Asia-Pacific, Latin
American, Middle Eastern, and African.
The branch
launched an unprecedented initiative to create a rating of international urban
activity. More than 80 cities of Eurasia took part in the 2017 rating. This
initiative was supported both at the Eurasian and at the world level.
After
discussing the results of activities for the reporting period, members of the
Assembly proceeded to the election of a new president of the office, which
takes place every three years. It was proposed to nominate the candidacy of
Ilsur Metshin again. According to the audience, Kazan became an exemplary city
under the leadership of I. Metshin. In addition, the Mayor of the capital of
the RT raised the significance of the Eurasian section of the UCLG to a new
level, believe the Assembly participants. By the results of the unanimous
decision, Ilsur Metshin again headed the Eurasian branch of the UCLG.
The head of
the capital of Tatarstan thanked his colleagues for their confidence in him. He
noted that it is a great honor for him and responsibility at the same time. The
next meeting will be held in South Africa on November 18-20, 2019.
In
addition, new participants joined the Eurasian Division of the UCLG. The
President gave relevant certificates to the newly elected members of the
branch: the Republic of Sakha, Karaganda, Magas, Khujand.
