On October 1 begins the Decade of Elderly People

(September 27, Taisiya Basharkina). Decade of Elderly People is traditionally held from October 1 til 10. Irina Prosviryakova, the Acting Head of the Social Protection told about the events for elderly people at the meeting in Kazan City Hall.

Grand opening of the Decade will be held on October 1 in the Big Concert Hall named after S. Saidashev. Currently 309,263 pensioners, representing 27% of the total population live in the city. Traditionally on October 1 Kazan citizens stepped over 100-year mark (there are 32 persons) will be provided with a financial assistance amounting to 1000 rubles, and the heads of administrations of the districts will congratulate long-livers.

This day charitable holiday dinners for the elderly people will be held in Behetle social canteens, and all senior citizens can use free bath services.

Withinthe Decade of Elderly People urban services and district administrations have planned various activities, for example “Clean an apartment”, "Domestic helper", "Village".

According to I. Prosviryakova there is a one more large-scale action that is the Computer Literacy. The aim of the action is to get a necessary level of knowledge and skills for elderly people  required to work on the computer and Internet.

The "Physical activity is a way to longevity" action, the 5-th city tournament in Russian billiard, water sports holiday "Body and soul have to be young", “Who over 55", the annual match meeting of veterans in football do not pass the Decade.

Irina Prosviryakova noted that a cultural program for the elderly people will be intensive:

Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan appealed to the heads of city services and the heads of district administrations to hold the Decade of Elderly People in the capital of Tatarstan properly. "I urge to regard this event with maximum warmth and kindness", Ilsur Metshin said.
