The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, Honorary Chairman of the BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities, and President of UNACLA, presented the city's experience in developing international cooperation at the KazanForum. He spoke at the session dedicated to the tools of humanitarian influence in the Islamic world.
The Mayor of Kazan emphasized that the development of horizontal humanitarian ties is becoming an important tool for strengthening trust between nations and finding joint solutions to global challenges.
«The experience of Kazan shows that the participation of municipalities in public diplomacy can make a significant contribution to the multipolar system of international relations», – the Mayor said.
Ilsur Metshin described Kazan as one of the key cultural and humanitarian centers of Russia's interaction with the Islamic world. He recalled that the capital of Tatarstan participates in the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group, led by the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov.
The Mayor noted that international relations with Islamic countries have been strengthening over the past years. In 2022, the year of the 1100th anniversary of the Adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria, the city was declared the Youth Capital of the OIC and hosted the Global Youth Summit. In 2024, the capital of Tatarstan hosted the 5th International Scientific and Theological Conference «The Spiritual Silk Road: the Importance of Religious Values in Greater Eurasia», following which the spiritual leaders of the Muslim BRICS countries adopted a resolution on strengthening humanitarian ties. In 2026, Kazan received the status of the cultural capital of the Islamic world.
