Kazan is second only to Moscow in life expectancy
(KZN.RU, October 8, by Taisiya Basharkina) Kazan takes second place among Russian cities with over a million inhabitants in terms of average life expectancy. The capital of Tatarstan with its average of 73.2 years is second only to the capital of Russia, where the average life expectancy is as high as 74 years. This statistic was cited by the head of the Health Administration of Tatarstan's Health Ministry Ramil Akhmetov.
According to him, in the first nine months of 2012, 15,097 children were born in Kazan. The birth rate over the past five years has increased by 50%, stated R. Akhmetov.
“The fact that in recent years Kazan managed to reverse the negative trend and achieve stable indicators of birth rate, life expectancy and population growth is a litmus test of the quality of life in our city. We are justly proud of these figures, but we should not be satisfied with what has been achieved: in Europe, life expectancy is 80 years, and this is something to strive for,” commented Mayor Ilsur Metshin on Kazan demographics.
