(KZN.RU, June 23, by Taisiya Basharkina) Today, Kazan marks the Tatar national holiday “Sabantuy”. President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, State Counsellor of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev and Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin visited the Sabantui-2012 main venue in Birchwood Grove at the village of Mirny.
“Each district of the republic celebrates Sabantuy at the end of field work. All in all, 54 regions of Russia and 22 countries celebrate this holiday," said the president greeting the holidaymakers. "Sabantuy is our people’s favorite holiday, it is a holiday for all," said the head of the republic and wished everybody present good health, happiness and prosperity.
In the morning, sports competitions began in front of the stage in the main square: boys and men tried their hand at the Tatar wrestling "kuresh", and confident youths tried to climb the smooth 24-meter-high pole. People's Artist of Russia and Tatarstan Venera Ganieva and students of the Tatar "Factory of Stars" entertained the public.
An open air presentation of “Natsional’noe Podvorye”, showing the life and customs of the peoples of the republic, was a traditional feature of the festival.
"People say: If there’s bread, there’s song. There’s been lots of rain and sun in the fields of the republic, and, God willing, there will be bread," concluded the Mayor of Kazan wishing everyone peaceful and sunny skies.
