(KZN.RU, June 22). Interest in the capital of Tatarstan at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum is truly great, said the Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin commenting on the discussion "International sports heritage", in which he participated.
It may be recalled that a discussion on international sports heritage was held at the 25th International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg. It was attended by the Mayor of Kazan, the Russian president’s aide Arkady Dvorkovich, the Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, the deputy speaker of the State Duma Svetlana Zhurova and a number of famous athletes, journalists and businessmen.
The panelists debated the questions of connection between a country’s leading position in economy and in sports, whether success in sports can kick-start economic development, what practical benefits there are in holding international sports events such as the Olympic Games or FIFA World Cup, and the rational use of sports venues in the aftermath of international sports events.
Speaking on the topic stated in the title of the discussion, Ilsur Metshin noted with satisfaction that this issue has been resolved in Kazan. “All our sports facilities are located in densely populated areas of the capital and at federal universities; therefore, we don’t have any problems using the sports infrastructure following a sporting event", said the mayor recalling that currently the capital of Tatarstan is using 26 Universiade sports facilities, four more projects will become operational next year, and the last venue - a football stadium with a capacity of 45 thousand seats – is due to be completed in 2013.
Assessing St. Petersburg Economic Forum, Ilsur Metshin noted genuine interest in Kazan. "Universiade 2013 is a great help and a driving force for this interest," he said.
The mayor also expressed hope that holding the 2018 World Cup in Kazan, and possibly the world championship in water sports, will further enhance the attractiveness of the city.
