(Kazan, KZN.RU, May 11, by Zilya Gayfi) More than 120,000 tourists visited Kazan during the May holidays. The capital of Tatarstan, along with Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi and Volgograd, became one of the most popular destinations in Russia. Hotel occupancy during the holidays was 85 – 95%, Evgenia Lodvigova, the chairperson of the Committee for the Promotion of Tourism of the Kazan Executive Committee, reported at today's Business Monday meeting.
"The average length of tourists' stay in Kazan was three days. From May 1 to 3, hotel room occupancy was 90-95%, from May 9 to 11 – 85%. The total number of visitors to Kazan during the May holidays was 120 thousand. In general, Russian demand for May travel grew by 21% compared to last year. In addition, according to the oktogo.ru booking service, the number of May 9 trips inside Russia for the first time exceeded the number of overseas trips. This indicates the redirection of the tourist flow towards the domestic market," said Evgenia Lodvigova.
An important factor in attracting visitors is event tourism. The top attraction of the May holidays was the first culinary festival "Delicious Kazan," during which May 1 was “Echpochmok Day” and May 9 – “Field Kitchen Day.”
Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin praised the city readiness to welcome guests, but the new tourist season requires further development of the tourist industry. "Considering the size of our country, there are always places to go. People do visit us. Just like other major Russian cities, we are a popular brand, but we cannot be complacent about our rankings. There's still a lot to be done," said the mayor.
