(Kazan, KZN.RU, May 3, by Taisiya Basharkina) The Tatarstan capital topped the list of Russia's most popular tourist destinations for the May holidays. This was announced by Deputy Head of the Executive Committee Ivan Kuznetsov at the Business Monday meeting.
According to the rankings compiled by the Russian online hotel booking service Oktogo.ru, Kazan leads the most popular tourist destinations for the May holidays. According to the website Booking.com, 97% of Kazan hotel rooms were booked, while the average for the other mega cities stood at 70%.
This high popularity of the city was fraught with certain difficulties. Thus, according to I.Kuznetsov, it was almost impossible to book a tour on those dates, and there were not enough guides. Bus tours with audio guides proved to be the most popular. Kazan's most popular sites were the Kremlin and the Riviera, with an increased interest in the Old Tatar Settlement.
Mayor Ilsur Metshin noted that Kazan should become a city not just to spend a holiday, but also to hold business forums and conferences. "I am glad that our efforts to promote holiday and weekend tourism have yielded results. But, unfortunately, on weekdays, the picture looks less rosy; we have to move on and develop event tourism. Currently, most national and international forums are held in Moscow and St. Petersburg. We should become a city not only to spend a holiday, but also to hold business forums," summed up Ilsur Metshin.
