(KZN.RU, January 14, by Taisiya Basharkina) During the past year of the "Old Town" - "Iske – Shekher" prefecture's work, the territory of Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda (Old-Tatar Settlement) has been revived and brought from "clinical death." This is the way Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin described the main results of the prefecture's work during Business Monday.
Thus, 14 objects have been repaired and restored in the settlement. According to the area prefect Linar Zakirov, 55 buildings located on 12 streets are currently undergoing repairs and restoration. Forty-two of the buildings are registered as cultural heritage objects.
All in all, the prefecture has 89 sites of historical and cultural heritage, including monuments of federal significance, churches, mosques, museums, as well as houses associated with the life and work of numerous famous writers, poets, educators, community and religious leaders.
The first fully restored neighborhoods of Old Tatar Settlement will be ready for the 2013 Universiade. "The task of the prefecture is to work in collaboration with the investors, architects, artists and craftsmen to preserve the spirit of the Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda. Although the area is historic, the old town needs new ideas," said I.Metshin.
