(KZN.RU, November 23, by Taisiya Basharkina) More than 44 thousand trees were planted in Kazan in 44 days – these are the results of the large-scale "Green record" project in 2012. In a solemn ceremony, companies most actively involved in the project were awarded at City Hall.
Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin thanked all those who took part in the project and stressed that these are only the first steps on a long journey of city greening and landscaping. "I want our city not only to be the sports capital of Russia, but also its greenest and healthiest city," he said.
As deputy director of the Kazan board on landscaping and urban improvement Alexander Lobov stated, 44,273 new trees and 19,552 shrubs had been planted in six weeks. This number can be called unprecedented.
Felix Finkbeiner – world's most famous young environmentalist and the founder of the worldwide tree planting movement “Plant-for-the-Planet” under the auspices of the UN – was the guest of honor at the personal invitation of Ilsur Metshin.
The young ecologist thanked Kazan for the work they have carried out under "Green Record" and noted that, in spite of its 1000-year history, the city looks young. According to the youngster, everyone should plant 150 trees in his or her life.
