Today in Kazan, within the celebrations of the 1100th anniversary of the adopting Islam by the Volga Bulgaria, a commemorative event was held to install a corner stone to mark the beginning of the construction of the Cathedral Mosque.
The event was attended by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, State Councilor of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District Igor Komarov, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin and other guests who participate in the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of adopting of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria.
R.Minnikhanov noted that the international contest for the best design of the Cathedral Mosque has already started, and results will be summed up shortly. “The architecture of the mosque should be grand and unique, as well as should reflect our centuries–old culture,” - he emphasized.
He noted that the mosque will be built on public donations. The Igelek – Dobrota Charitable Foundation will be engaged in fundraising. “Everyone can contribute to this holy deed” - Tatarstan President added.
M.Khusnullin noted that in 922 the ancestors of the Tatars made a historical choice by joining one of the world religions – Islam. “This has served as a powerful impetus for their cultural, economic and political development,”- he said.
The Cathedral Mosque will be located opposite the Kazan Kremlin on the territory of the Kyrlay Park. The construction of the mosque is included in the federal plan of the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of adopting Islam by the Volga Bulgaria. The initiator was the Muslim community of Tatarstan represented by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the republic of Tatarstan, Tatarstan President’s Press Office reports.
