Guzel Yakhina’s novel “My Children”

The other day, there were shooting of a film in Kazan based on the wonderful book by Guzel Yakhina “Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes”. I fancied the novel for its beautiful language, detailed reality, and the bright fates of people. It is as if you plunge into another reality and live life together with the characters.

The great discovery for me was another book “My Children” by the same writer. This is a different story, characters, and reality, but it also catches your attention from the first lines. The original world of the German Volga region is registered very vividly. And if in the center of the first novel is the story of Zuleikha from the Tatar heartland, the second one tells about the fate and life of the whole people, the Volga Germans, whose life we see through the eyes of the main character. I recommend it to you! After all, who knows, maybe this book will get the film adaptation as well. And we will see how familiar characters come to life on the screen.
