(KZN.RU, August 30) Today, Kazan celebrated City Day and Republic Day. This year, the main venue of the festival was the Chyornoye Ozero park. A multi-ethnic show was held there; visitors could become acquainted with the traditions of the peoples living in the Republic.
Honorary Citizen awards were presented to Kazan residents at City Hall. This year, the title was awarded to chairman of the Angela Vavilova Public Charitable Foundation, Vladimir Vavilov; deputy chairman of the Council of Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda Old-Timers, Nuraniya Biktemirova; honored coach of Russia and the USSR, Vladimir Zhitlov, and head coach of the Russia and Zenit volleyball teams, Vladimir Alekno.
As Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin put it, the holiday “is an occasion to take stock and celebrate our achievements … Our city is growing. Kazan and Tatarstan are Russia’s leaders in virtually all indicators of social and economic development. Our city is known far beyond its borders thanks to its public figures, executives, MPs, businessmen, doctors, teachers, cultural workers and athletes. We rejoice in our achievements, which add to the glory of Kazan,” said the mayor and congratulated all present on the occasion.
At 11:00, a folk festival "Play the accordion!" kicked off on the square at the Kamal Tatar Theater. And at 14.00, a G.Tukay state prize awards ceremony started. This year, the prize was awarded to the creators of the Kul-Sharif mosque complex. The ceremony was followed by a gala concert of the 6th International Folk Dance Youth Festival that brought together ensembles from 20 countries.
One of the activities of City and Republic Day was a republican sports and cultural festival held at the international equestrian complex “Kazan”. The City of Kazan Prize was contested in the third heat. English three-year-old thoroughbreds ran over a 2,000 meter distance.
At 20:00, the second festival "Kazan Autumn" kicked off on the square in front of the Farmers Palace with a concert by the State Symphony Orchestra of Tatarstan. This year, a special guest of the festival was the renowned tenor Roberto Alagna.
The August 30 public holiday ended with traditional fireworks over the river Kazanka. This year, it consisted of 400 rounds.
