White Mosque complex opens in Bolgar
(KZN.RU, June 11) The White Mosque complex was opened in Bolgar to celebrate an anniversary of the official adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria. The ceremony was attended by President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, State Counsellor of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev, Prime-Minister Ildar Khalikov, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and Muslim leaders of Russia.
The White Mosque complex is located near the entrance to Bolgar, close to the southern gate of the museum-reserve. The complex includes the buildings of the mosque itself, a madrasa and Mufti’s residence, surrounding an oratory square. The square is framed by an arcade of 88 columns and has a fountain in the middle. In the future, an orchard with flower beds and a lake will be laid around the mosque will.
The height of the two mosque minarets is 46.5 meters; the main dome diameter is 10 meters, the internal height of the dome -- 17 meters. The walls of the mosque are decorated with traditional decorative elements.
