The Russian national team took the first place in the
overall medal standings of the I CIS Games that ended in Kazan: the athletes
won 215 medals. Kazan athletes also made a significant contribution to the
victory of the country. Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, noted the high organizational
level of the international competitions in the capital of Tatarstan. “We have
once again confirmed the status of the city that can host major sports events. It
was a large and friendly team – doctors, law enforcement agencies,
well-coordinated work at the sports venues, at the Universiade Village and the
Kazan Expo. We are pleased that our colleagues give us the right to hold such
events, and we are coping with this mission”, -the head of the city said today
at the Business Monday.
More than 1,100 athletes from 14 to 23 years from nine
CIS countries participated in the I CIS Games from September 4 to 11. According
to the results of the competitions in 16 sports took place at 11 sports venues
and 181 sets of medals were awarded.
Kazan athletes also took prizes at the competitions:
Amir Khamidullin, Pavel Monich and Regina Galiakhmetova as part of the Russian
national team took first place in the team standings of badminton competitions
and won medals in doubles and individual competitions. Damir Akhmetsafin won gold
and bronze in table tennis, and Ilyas Fatykhov, a representative of the Ak Bure
sports association, won bronze in karate competitions.
