(KZN.RU, April 20, Ekaterina Andreeva). While visiting Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda (Old Tatar Settlement), visitors and residents of the city should experience the unique atmosphere of the 18th century. This opinion was expressed today by Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin during his inspection of Marjani Street, where restoration of historic buildings is about to begin.
The mayor visited three sites that await reconstruction: house Nos. 4, 6 and 8 Mardzhani Street. He emphasized that they should be treated as parts of a single ensemble since they stand at the origin of the embankment and are located at an elevation, visible from both the Kamal Theater and Salimazhanov Street. It is from this spot that Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda and one of its key streets begin, so the Mayor drew attention to the need to maintain the balance formed by the historical buildings.
"Marjani mosque dominates this street, and no other buildings should distract attention from it," said Ilsur Metshin.
"This corner of Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda is of great importance,” said I.Metshin. “Not only visitors but also locals should be able to familiarize themselves with how our ancestors lived, dressed and what handicrafts they were engaged in. Yes, Mercedes cars glide by and airplanes fly over, but coming here people should experience the atmosphere of times past."
