The Orthodox holiday in honor of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God was also marked in Kazan in the first week of November.
(KZN.RU, November 8, by Ekaterina Andreeva). Collective prayers on the occasion of one of the most important Muslim holidays - Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha) – were held in mosques all over Russia on November 6. Some 50 thousand faithful attended the 46 mosques in the capital of Tatarstan.
The temples could not accommodate everyone, so a lot of citizens listened to the sermons outside in spite of the cold.
At the al-Marjani mosque, the holiday sermon delivered by the mufti of Tatarstan Hazrat Ildus Faizov started at 9 o'clock in the morning. The service was broadcast live on the TNV television channel. President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov also attended the service.
Shortly before the Eid al-Adha – on November 4 - the great Orthodox feast in honor of the Kazan icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated. For the first time in the history of the Kazan eparchy, the celebrations were attended by Chairman of the Department for External Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Illarion of Volokolamsk.
The celebration began with a solemn liturgy in honor of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God at the Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan Kremlin. After that, the believers headed by Metropolitan Illarion proceeded with the miraculous icon to the Holy Cross Church. Some 4,000 people took part in the procession.
