(KZN.RU, November 8, by Taisiya Basharkina). An outstanding composer of our time - Sofia Gubaidulina - who celebrated her 80th anniversary this year - became honorary citizen of Kazan. The high award was presented to her in a solemn ceremony by Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin.
Recall that the title of Honorary Citizen of Kazan was conferred on Sofia Asgatovna on August 30 for her outstanding contribution to the development of musical art and enhancing Kazan’s standing in the international community, but she was unable to attend the ceremony at the time. Now Sofia Gubaidulina came to Kazan from Germany to participate in the 1st International Festival of Contemporary Music «CONCORDIA».
On behalf of the people of Kazan, Ilsur Metshin congratulated Sofia Asgatovna on her anniversary and thanked her for not forgetting her hometown. It was in the capital of Tatarstan that S. Gubaidulina spent her childhood and youth; it was here that she attended a music school and Kazan State Conservatory. "Kazan is a part of my soul, my inner world; nothing would have happened without the Kazan period," said Sofia Gubaidulina.
Immediately after the award ceremony, Sofia Gubaidulina went to the new Center of Contemporary Music, which bears her name. City Hall renovated the building for the composer’s anniversary.
The Center museum features Sofia Gubaidulina’s letters, photographs and surviving household items. Composer recognized the wooden coat hanger, praised the good selection of photos, played the hurdy-gurdy and talked with the students of music school No.1.
From November 5 to 19, the Sofia Gubaidulina Music Festival is being held in Kazan featuring the State Symphony Orchestra of Tatarstan and the eminent Russian musicians - David Geringas, Yuri Bashmet and the rector of Kazan Conservatory Rubin Abdullin.
