Kazan will celebrate World Car-Free Day
(KZN.RU, September 9, by Renat Shirmanov) Kazan will be the second city in Russia after Moscow to officially observe World Car-Free Day. This was announced by Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at a Business Monday meeting.
World Car-Free Day is marked on September 22. Motorists are requested to abstain from using their cars for one day. A variety of events will be held on the occasion.
"I received a formal proposal from the representatives of the United Nations to support the project, and we accepted it. Kazan will be the second city in Russia to officially hold the event," said Ilsur Metshin .
The Mayor noted that the beginning of the business season and of the academic year once again made the problem of traffic jams topical, although the situation is much better today than in the past. Ilsur Metshin recalled that in 2009 Russia's largest specialized transport infrastructure institute in St. Petersburg drew up a program of optimal transport infrastructure development in Kazan until 2020, part of which was implemented in advance of the Universiade.
