The Mayor of Kazan takes part in a meeting of the Association of BRICS+ Cities and Municipalities
A working meeting of the Association of BRICS+ Cities and Municipalities took place in Tangier, Morocco, as part of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Congress. Mayors and heads of the Association of BRICS Municipalities and countries, including Yevgeny Grachyov, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration for Internal Policy, Irina Guseva, Co-Chair of the All-Russian Association of Local Government Development, and the Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin attended the meeting. Ilsur Metshin was previously elected Honorary Chairman of the Association as its founder.
In his address, Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening horizontal ties between cities. He noted that the Association has become an effective space for dialogue, where municipal leaders work together to address urban issues.
“Our meeting is taking place today as part of the UCLG World Congress, and this is a good sign of multipolar order and readiness for dialogue,”- said Ilsur Metshin.
The Mayor of Kazan recalled the signing of an agreement between the Association and the UCLG, which was a significant achievement. According to Ilsur Metshin, this step was an important stage in the integration of the BRICS municipal platform into global networks of local authorities, which strengthened the role of cities as full participants in the international process.
Kazan Mayor also dwelled on youth activities in his speech. Ilsur Metshin recalled the successful hosting of the first BRICS Youth Festival in Kazan, which brought together 150 talented participants from 35 municipalities. The Mayor announced that Belarus supports the initiative and plans to continue the project.
“I am happy to announce that Belarus, a BRICS partner country, has supported the idea of holding the festival, which will take place in Minsk next spring. We can now share the good news with the children: the festival is alive, and everyone will soon receive an invitation to join this project,”- said the Mayor of Kazan.
This year, the World Congress of United Cities and Local Governments, the largest international organization for municipalities, takes place in Tangier, Morocco. Ilsur Metshin presented the experience of Kazan in an inclusive environment at the General Assembly of UCLG Eurasia section, and he was re-elected as the President of UCLG-Eurasia.
